Summer is here, and it’s time for the beach, BBQs – and a whole lot of temptation.

It’s totally possible to let loose and still hold on to the sober and clean time you’ve worked so hard to build the rest of the year. Just keep these six steps in mind!

1. Stay close to recovery.
School’s out for the summer, but meetings are still in session! It’s vital that you keep up with your recovery program no matter the season: That means attending meetings, meeting with your sponsor, continuing step work, keeping up with commitments and more.

2. Stay connected to your Higher Power.
While you’re working out your body to get ready for the beach, make sure you’re spiritually fit, too. That means maintaining a daily regimen of prayer or meditation, to keep your mind clear and focused.

3. Stay honest.
Don’t forget that addicts and alcoholics are known for our stinking thinking. Tell recovery friends and your sponsor about any summer plans so you can get a reality check before it’s too late.

4. Stay healthy.
Now is not the time to skimp on sleep and other healthy habits. Make sure you’re well-rested, well-fed, and doing your best to stay out of trigger-happy HALT mode (hungry, angry, lonely or tired).

5. Stay alert.
Keep an eye out for possible triggers or temptations. If you’re going to a group event, don’t be afraid to ask if there’s going to be alcohol (or drugs), so you can prepare yourself to deal with it or skip the event altogether.

6. Just don’t stay.
Make sure you have an exit plan for any party or event you attend, in case the temptations get too great. There’s no shame in skipping out if you start to feel uncomfortable: In fact, it might save your life.
