What is Tradition One in AA & NA?

By June 20, 2018Uncategorized

Just when you think you’ve wrapped your head around the 12 Steps, there’s so much more to learn about your fellowship.

With 12 Traditions, 12 Concepts, 12 Principles and more, the complexity of AA, NA and other groups can be overwhelming!

It may seem easy to dismiss the Traditions or Concepts as bureaucratic fluff that has little to do with your recovery. But the traditions in particular can be helpful in enriching your life.

If the 12 Steps make your life a little more manageable, then the 12 Traditions are said to do the same for your relationships. These simple guidelines for behavior can make living as a part of society easier.

It all starts with Tradition One: “Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends upon AA unity.” (Other Fellowships use similar wording in their own texts.)

In short, it’s a reminder to lose the selfish behavior of your past, and value the people around you. Respect other people’s opinions, treat them like you would like to be treated, and try to reach consensus when you don’t agree.

By doing that, your own recovery will be strengthened, and your life as a whole will be enriched.

Tradition One is even more important when you’re living closely with others, such as in a Recovery Residence.

At Clean Path Behavioral Health, we value the 12 Steps and Traditions as a guideline for walking the road to recovery.
