One Day At A Time

Making the decision to pursue 12 Step recovery can be intimidating. How do you join AA or NA?

Before walking through the doors, so many questions and excuses can run through your mind.

Am I really an alcoholic or addict?

Am I “bad enough” to pursue 12 Step recovery?

What if these people aren’t “like” me?

Making the decision to pursue help is the hard part. So, the 12 Step fellowships make joining up easy.

Tradition Three in AA – one of the 12 general rules that guide individual groups and meetings – states: The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking .

For NA, the only requirement is a desire to stop using.

That means that you don’t necessarily have to be ready to label yourself an “alcoholic” or “addict” to start going to meetings.

You don’t have to have had a brutal rock bottom moment.

No one will be judging you to see whether you’re really meant to be there.

You don’t even have to be sure that you want to be in recovery for the rest of your life.

All that you need is that simple spark of a desire to stop. The “how” of that will be revealed over time, if you stay open-minded and just keep doing the next indicated thing.
